Our Story

My journey in the restaurant industry began in 2002 when I moved to the U.S. from my hometown at the age of 22. I started working at an American restaurant in San Francisco, washing dishes, but I always saw it as a stepping stone to something bigger. I knew I wanted to make a career out of this, so I decided to push myself by learning English. I enrolled in courses at City College of San Francisco and, after several years of mastering the language, I began taking cooking classes for three years to really immerse myself in the culinary world.

It wasn’t easy, but I was determined. When the sous chef at the restaurant unexpectedly quit, I jumped at the chance to fill the role, training hard for two months on a trial basis. My dedication to sticking with the same company and growing from within helped me build a strong foundation in the industry.

At 31, I moved to Washington, DC, to pursue a new opportunity as a chef, and not long after, I found myself in Frederick, where I was offered a chef position at a well-known local restaurant. After working there for several years, I decided it was time to take the leap and open my own restaurant in 2014 – Mayta’s Peruvian Cuisine. I wanted to create a dining experience that truly reflected my passion and background. In 2022, I expanded the space to include more seating, a bar, and a patio, which has allowed me to continue growing and serving the community I love.

Today, I’m proud to share my journey and continue doing what I love—bringing people together through food.
